Student Morning Drop Off and After School Pick Up
In order to ensure student safety during morning drop off and after school pick up, parents should stay in vehicles at all times. Students will not be released to parents who park off circle drive and walk to the building until all cars have left the circle area.. Security/ Parent Roster
Our world has changed tremendously over the past several years. Places we once considered as safe must now initiate security measures. We are extremely pleased that parents and visitors feel comfortable in our school. However, it has become important that all individuals check in at the office before going to a classroom. At 8:00 a.m. all doors to the building will be locked except the main entry doors. Visitors will need to go through the office and sign in to access any other portion of the building. This will not only add security to the building, but also helps limit interruptions to classroom activities. Scheduling an appointment with your child's teacher will afford you her undivided attention to whatever concern you may have.
Visitor tags will be issued by the office to help staff identify all individuals who have the potential to come into contact with students. These tags will indicate to staff that these visitors have a legitimate reason to be in our school.
Enrollment
For those who have not already registered, your child will bring home an enrollment data card on the first day of school. This information is needed for all students at the beginning of each school year. Please be aware that emergency contact numbers need to be local numbers. Unless otherwise directed, your primary home phone number will be entered in the School Reach Program for calls regarding school delays, cancellation or other emergencies. Please return these forms as soon as possible.
Elementary School Handbook
Your child will receive a handbook of rules and procedures for North Lawrence Elementary Schools. This handbook is now included in the Journal/Assignment Book issued to each child. Please read for general information. Rules in this handbook have been reviewed with children in the classroom. All rules are for the safety of children and efficient operation of the school. The NLCS student dress code may also be found in the handbook on page 7. The school corporation's Technology Handbook is also included in this booklet. Parents must sign and return the page indicating that is has been received before access to computers can be provided to students.
Parent Questions
Parents new to the building should feel free to contact teachers or the principal with any questions concerning the school or instructional procedures.
Tobacco Free Facility
All North Lawrence Community Schools buildings and grounds are designated as Tobacco Free areas. Please observe this policy at all school sponsored events. This is not only an NLCS policy, but is also necessary to comply with the "No Child Left Behind" Federal Legislation.
NLCS Policy - K2-Spice Ban
On 11/11/10 the NLCS School Board officially banned K2-Spice from school grounds and school activities. Any student who possesses, transmits or is under the influence of the substance, or a similar substance, will be offered Due Process for expulsion from school.
School Pictures
Student pictures will be taken on Friday, August 26, 2011.
Student Parties
Out of respect for all students, we ask that you not pass out party invitations at school or on the school bus. The only time we permit this is if the entire class is being invited to the party. We are also not allowed to give out addresses and phone numbers of our students. Please help us with this request as we are trying to eliminate hurt feelings.
Attendance
Studies show that there is a direct relationship between success and attendance. This holds true in any undertaking, at any time in a person's life. We all want our children to grow into adulthood with every opportunity to become successful. It is while they are young that they formulate the attitudes and learn through examples the skills they will need for a successful future.
Absences
Please call us on the morning of the absence. All absences must be accompanied by a note from the parent, guardian, or physician. If you have taken your child to the doctor or dentist, have the office give you an excuse or fax to school at 278-7703. Parental notes will be accepted for the first 5 absences each semester; however, we will require a doctor's statement for any days over this amount.
Tardies
Over the past few years we have seen a dramatic increase in student tardiness. When a student is late to class it creates a number of problems. Tardiness causes a disruption in the classroom activities, instruction is stopped and must be started over, and it also sets a less than desirable example if a student is constantly tardy. Please make every effort to see to it that students are at school on time.
Wellness Policy
Recent legislation has required school corporations to establish a "Wellness Policy." This policy encourages healthy foods and snacks, physical activity and nutrition education.
