INFORMATION FOR PARENTS

Through the McKinney-Vento Act of 1987, as amended by the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001, federal funds are available to support programs to

meet the needs of homeless children and youth.  The state defines homeless as;

Doubled up – students sharing housing due to loss of housing or economic hardship

Sheltered – students living in emergency, domestic violence or transitional shelter

Unsheltered – students living in campgrounds, cars, public places, substandard housing, etc. due to lack of housing

Hotels / Motels – students living in hotels / motels for lack of housing

If you feel your child falls in any of these categories, please contact your child’s school office for a list of benefits and a statement of rights.

The Statement of Rights can also be found on the North Lawrence Community Schools website at http://www.nlcs.k12.in.us.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT ABSENCES

Please call the school by 8:30 if your child will not be attending due to an appointment or illness.

We need to know that all our students are safe and accounted for!  All absences must be accompanied by a note from the

parent, guardian, or physician.  PLEASE NOTE:  If the school calls home to check on a student who is not at school – the

student’s absence is NOT considered excused.

MEDICATIONS (Message from NLCS Administration)

We encourage parents to work with their health care provider to give their child's medications at home.  Short term medicine

prescribed 2 times a day should be taken before school and in the evening at home; medicine prescribed 3 times a day should

be taken before and after school and at bedtime, unless otherwise indicated, in writing from the physician.

Parents, a reminder about determining when your child is too sick to come to school

Please keep your child home when:

  1. He/she has a fever.  Children whose fever is brought down by medication (this includes children on aspirin or Tylenol) should stay
  2. home from school, too.
  3. He/she has diarrhea.
  4. He/she has a runny nose that cannot be contained.
  5. He/she has vomited in the last 12 hours.
  6. Any open wound needs to be covered due to the potential for body fluid exposure.

If your child picks at scabs you must cover it with a bandage.

  1. He/she has ear drainage.

When children are sent to school sick it endangers the health of other students, as well as the staff.  When your children are at school,

we want them to be active learners.  Being sick interferes with the learning process for your child.

We strive to keep our classroom environment as clean and sanitary as possible.  We need you to help us by keeping sick children at

home until symptoms are gone.  Your cooperation and effort is greatly appreciated in this effort to keep your child and others healthy

throughout the school year.

 GENERAL INFO:

Tobacco Free Facility

All North Lawrence Community School buildings and grounds are designated as Tobacco Free areas.  We ask for your cooperation in

bserving this policy at all school sponsored events.  This is not only an NLCS policy, but is also necessary to comply with the “No Child

Left Behind” Federal Legislation.

Attendance Policy   (found in NLCS Handbook)

Absence:  In accordance with State Law, an excused absence is for personal illness or death in the family.  When a student returns to

school after an absence, as defined by state law, he/she (1) shall present a doctor or dentist statement giving reasons for the absence,

or (2) parent’s statement may be accepted for the first five (5) absences (personal illness/death in the family) during the semester.  Any

days beyond that number will require a doctor’s statement or a parent conference for the absence to be considered an excused absence.

All vacations and other non-school activities involving students should be scheduled during times that school is not in session.  Any deviation

to this policy must be approved by the principal.  Students/parents who violate the attendance policy may be referred to the Truancy Intervention

Program and Prosecutor.  Any absence due to a National Holiday, Religious Observance must be approved by the principal prior to the event

and with written request.  Upon approval it will be counted as an excused absence.  Tardiness:  Students are considered tardy if they are

not in school on time.  Students are to report to their classrooms by the start of the first class/period.  Parents:  Please note that almost all

tardiness is avoidable.  It is important that you make every effort to ensure that your child is ON Time to school.  Tardiness disrupts not only

the school program, but also the progress of each child in each class is impacted.  Tardiness seriously interferes with your child’s academic

progress.  Being on time teaches your child to be responsible and to practice good time management skills.  We honor “responsibility” as an

essential Life skill and we ask you and your child to choose to do the same thing.  Please note that tardiness (10 tardies) will also lead

to a referral to the Truancy Intervention Program via the Prosecutor’s Office.

Perfect Attendance:  (NLCS Handbook)

A student must be present from bell to bell without any departures throughout the school year to be considered having perfect attendance.

If a student leaves during his/her lunch hour with a parent or guardian, he/she may not sign out prior to their assigned lunch hour and must

be signed back in before his/her lunch hour is over.

Outstanding Attendance:  To receive outstanding attendance, the student is not tardy nor departs the school day early more than three times

each nine week grading period.

NLCS Dress Code (NLCS Handbook)

School personnel asks for our support to insure that students come to school in attire that is modest, does not pose health or safety hazards,

and is not disruptive or distracting to the school environment.  Please consult the dress code in your child’s handbook.  When appropriateness

of dress is in question, the principal or his/her designee may request modification or send the student home to change.  This includes clothing

and footwear that poses a safety issue for the child.  We ask that children do not wear flip-flop or heelie shoes (with the heels in them)

to school.  They are unsafe footwear for the playground.

Textbooks

It is very important you remind your child to take care of his/her hardback textbooks.  These are rented textbooks and any damaged textbooks

have to be replaced.  Most of these books cost $40.00 - $50.00 each.  We will be billing you all for lost and/or damaged books this year.

Student Parties

Out of respect for all students, we ask that you not distribute party invitations at school or on the school bus.  The only time we permit this is if

the entire class is being invited to the party.  We are also not allowed to give out addresses and phone numbers of our students.

Name Tag

Security

As an added security measure, we ask all visitors to the building sign in at the office and obtain a “Visitor” I.D. tag.  This will help all staff members identify legitimate guests at our school.

Sign In-Sign Out

If students arrive late to school, they must be signed in by a parent or guardian.  Also, students must be signed out by a parent or guardian when leaving the building early.

This includes if you are taking your child out for lunch.  The sign in and sign out sheet is located in the office.

Medications

If your child takes non prescription medication, it is important that you give it to him/her at home before/after school.

Student Insurance

The school corporation does not provide accident insurance for each student.  Please check to see that your medical insurance covers accidents that may occur at school.

Textbooks

It is very important you remind your child to take care of his/her hardback textbooks.  These are rented textbooks and any damaged textbooks have to be replaced.  Most of these

This is not only an NLCS policy, but is also necessary to comply with the “No Child Left Behind” Federal Legislation.

Student Parties

Out of respect for all students, we ask that you not distribute party invitations at school or on the school bus.  The only time we permit this is if the entire class is being invited to the party.

We are also not allowed to give out addresses and phone numbers of our students.

Physicals

Again this year all students trying out for the 4th/5th grade boy’s or girl’s basketball team must have a physical on file in the office prior to tryouts.  Copies of the forms are available in the

office.  Please call or send a note if you would like a form sent home with your child.  This IHSAA Pre-Participation Physical Evaluation form must be completed by your physician.

There will not be another free clinic this fall since it was offered to you in the spring.  Tryouts will be sometime in October for basketball.

School Phones

Each classroom is equipped with a telephone and a voice mailbox system.  At the office, we have the ability to transfer your calls directly to your child’s classroom teachers’ voice mailbox,

if your desire is to talk with the teacher.  Teachers check their messages several times throughout the day and will most likely be able to return your call the day you left your message.

We are fortunate to have this option.  Our hope is it will be a means of offering better communication between school and home.  If you receive a voicemail message when you call the

school, it means all the lines are full and/or everyone in the office is unable to answer your call.  Please be sure to leave us a message.  We will return your call as soon as possible.

Mrs. Brown’s extension number is 100 and Ms. Hagel’s extension number is 101.  A list of each teacher’s extension number is listed on the back of this page.
