Weather Information

Weather conditions are not always the same over the 325 mile area of the school cooperation.  There are times when some routes should not be run but enough routes can be run to transport enough students in safety that school can be open. A student living on a route, or part of a route, which is not run on a particular day will not be counted absent from school on that day.  The parents of the student should write a note to the principal indicating that this was the cause of the absence.  The parents should make the decision  as to whether or not a student goes to school on an extremely cold day if the student has to wait at a bus stop or because of having to walk a distance to school.  These absences will be considered to be excused absences.  It is requested that parents notify the driver in advance if they believe that road conditions are too hazardous for their child to
ride the bus on a particular day.
School closing announcements are made as early as possible and no later than 6:00a.m. of the day in question.  Announcements are made via radio broadcast. Please do not call the radio station, the school, or school officials since these calls simply delay the process used to make announcements.  Early dismissal from school will be avoided whenever possible, however in the event we must dismiss children earlier than the normal time, parents should instruct children where to go if they cannot stay in the house alone.  School principals should be informed in writing of any special circumstances or situation related to early dismissal of students.

 Two Hour Delay
School closings will be announced as early as possible and no later than 6:00a.m.  Announcements will be made via radio broadcasts.  Please do not call the radio station, the school, or school officials since these calls simply delay the process used to make the announcements.  Schools could have a two hour delay. If so, school will begin at 10:00a.m.  Breakfast would not be served on these days.  The two hour delay would be announced via the radio.

Security Information

To provide security for our students and staff at PVI it is imperative that all visitors (this includes parents, grandparents, brothers, sisters, aunts and uncles ) stop by the office to sign in and receive a visitors pass.  Any visitor in the building without a visible pass will be asked to return to the office and pick one up.

Drop Off & Pick-up Information

Each morning and afternoon we have dozens of students being dropped off and picked up in front of PVI.  I ask that you always drop your child off as close to the crosswalk as possible.  If you are unable to see our crossing guard please wait until you are close enough to know they have taken their position in the center of the lane to hold all traffic until all is clear.  I would also ask that you direct your child to wait for the crossing guard to take their position before they enter the lane to get into any vehicle.  They should never go between parked cars to catch a ride.  Thank you for your assistance with this.

Left Car Lane –Thru Traffic

At all times we try to keep the left car lane a thru-traffic lane.  If you are entering to pick up your child after school please stay to the right.  We have had times that a student is not out waiting for their ride and we have both lanes at a stand still.  If you use the left lane, please continue on and not stop and wait if your child is not out front.  Simply circle back around and attempt it again.

Buses Only Lane

This lane is never to be used for car traffic picking up or dropping off children.  We have buses coming in at different times and sometimes I am required to call buses back to school.  The bus lane must be kept open at all times and free from public traffic.  From time to time we may have an emergency and we will utilize the lane for school personnel.  However, if the left car lane is kept open, we can keep traffic flowing and this is not a concern.

Cafeteria Information

Food services has expanded its information on www.nlcs.k12.in.us.  Under the NLCS tab, cafeteria updates and Free and Reduced Meal information is now available on the Cafeteria Information tab.

Soy Butter

Food service has received phone calls from parents inquiring where to purchase Soy Butter (peanut butter replacement).  Soy Butter can be found at WalMart with the peanut butter. It has a green top with a green label with a picture of a girl and a boy on the label that says, “Wow! Tastes, Just Like Peanut Butter!”

PVI Objectives

Objectives are selected each year through our PL221 plan.  These objectives are determined based on need.  We have found three areas that we continue to address on a yearly basis; reading comprehension, writing, and problem solving.   We want to provide you a strategy to work with your child on each objective.  This month’s strategy will focus on answering questions to determine reading comprehension.  When your child reads be thinking about these types of questions that can guide to good understanding of the story or information read.  Actually talk about these types of questions with your child when covering a chapter in science or social studies or when reading an Accelerated Reader book.

Reading Comprehension Question Strategies:

"Right There” Questions:  Questions found right in the text that ask students to find the one right answer located in one place as a word or a sentence in the passage.

Example: Who is Frog's friend? Answer: Toad

"Think and Search" Questions:  Questions based on the recall of facts that can be found directly in the text. Answers are typically found in more than one place, thus requiring students to "think" and "search" through the passage to find the answer.

Example: Why was Frog sad? Answer: His friend was leaving.

"Author and You" Questions:  Questions require students to use what they already know, with what they have learned from reading the text. Student's must understand the text and relate it to their prior knowledge before answering the question.

Example: How do think Frog felt when he found Toad? Answer: I think that Frog felt happy because he had not seen Toad in a long time. I feel happy when I get to see my friend who lives far away.

"On Your Own" Questions:

Questions are answered based on a student’s prior knowledge and experiences. Reading the text may not be helpful to them when answering this type of question.

Example: How would you feel if your best friend moved away? Answer: I would feel very sad if my best friend moved away because I would miss her.
