Principal’s message:
I hope you had a wonderful time with your family and friends during the holidays.  We appreciate the many gifts and cards, and the kind thoughts to go with them.  Your kindness and thoughtfulness is appreciated and the Dollens staff and I hope you have a blessed New Year!  Hard to believe we are halfway through the school year.  Time flies when you are having fun!

Emergency Dismissal Information
Weather conditions are not always the same over the 325 square mile area of the school corporation.  There are times when some routes should not be run but enough routes can be run to transport enough students in safety that schools can be open.  A student living on a route, or part of a route, which is not run on a particular day WILL NOT be counted absent from school on that day.  The parents of the student should write the school indicating that this was the cause of the absence.

If the student must wait at a bus stop for a long period of time or must walk a long distance to school, parents should make the decision as to whether or not a student goes to school on an extremely cold day. These absences will be considered to be excused absences upon the school receiving a note from the parent indicating this to be the reason for the absence.  It is requested that parents notify the driver in advance if they believe that road conditions are too hazardous for their child to ride the bus on a particular day.

Early dismissals from school will be avoided whenever possible; however, in the event we must dismiss students earlier than the normal time, parents should instruct children where to go if they cannot stay in the house alone.  School principals must be informed in writing of any special circumstance or situation related to early dismissal of students.

School closing announcements are made as early as possible and normally not later than 6:00 a.m. of the day in question.  Announcements are made via radio broadcast on WQRK (105.5), WWEG (102.6), WBIW (103.5), WBWB (96.7), WFLQ (100.1), WKKG (101.5), and WUME (95.3).  Please do not call the radio station, the school, or school officials since these calls simply delay the process used to make such announcements. Each home will be called using our new SchoolReach software. Please be certain that you keep our office notified when changing phone numbers.

Two Hour Delay Information
As we endure the chill of winter weather it may become necessary to announce a two-hour delay due to road conditions.  Please tune to WBIW or watch for an announcement on the Louisville or Indianapolis television stations any morning that the weather has caused driving conditions to deteriorate.  A reminder that school breakfast is not served on days with two hour delays.

Elementary Basketball Tourney
Our gyms will once again host the Elementary Basketball Tourney. Games are scheduled in both gyms each night from January 7th-12th. We welcome all fans from each of our NLCS elementary schools as well as St. Vincent. We of course want to wish our own Dollens Bearcats – both boys and girls – the very best as they strive to play well enough to bring home the championship. We appreciate the efforts of OMS Athletic Director Mr. Mike Wright for organizing the tourney, and Dollens Secretary Mrs. Judy Mitchell for the extra work that she performs in keeping the books for the entire tourney. We hope to see a large turnout for the good old Blue and White - - Go Bearcats!!

Lifeskills for January
We will place an emphasis upon the Lifeskills of perseverance, common sense, and integrity during the month of January.  One way to illustrate these important skills for life is to consider that it is good common sense to be prepared for the cold by dressing warmly for school each day in order to persevere through the normally frigid months of January and February so that we can uphold our integrity by attending school each day. (That may be a run-on sentence!) There are many other uses of course – help your child learn more about these Lifeskills by discussing them at home.

Textbook Rental
All textbook rental fees are now overdue. Please come to our office and meet with school secretary, Mrs. Mitchell, to begin making payments or pay in full as soon as possible.

P.T.O
Thank you to all who volunteered with Santa’s Workshop, it was a huge success.  Please join our next meeting on January 10th @ 3:30 p.m.   We had a large number of parents and teachers at our last meeting, so come and help us make a positive impact at Dollens Elementary!

Blessings in a packback
We are looking for additional volunteers to come in and fill bags to send home.  If you are interested in helping please call our elementary office,  275-3885.  As always, we are looking for sponsors to continue this program. It only costs $80.00 to cover a student for the year and you make checks out to Life Pantry, with Blessing/Dollens in the memo line.

Happy New Year!
