800 2D ART DISCOVERY
Grade Level: 9-12 Term: 1 Semester ( 1 Credit)
This course is for the student that needs a fine arts credit, but is concerned about taking a regular course. Projects will vary from learning simple techniques to opportunities to gain credit through reading and writing projects. Talent is not necessary for this course, just a desire to learn some practical skills in art.
802 SCREENPRINTING
Grade Level: 9-12 Term: One Semester (1 credit)
Students will learn the process and skills necessary to screenprint t-shirts and other wearing apparel. This course will involve both single and multi-colored projects. Basics of computer graphics will be taught as it relates to print designs. Drawing skills are not necessary but do help. Projects take 4 to 9 weeks to complete, therefore, the student should be self-motivated. The student is expected to provide some materials. The additional costs will range from $5 to $10.
806 ADVANCED SCREENPRINTING
Grade Level: 10-12 Term: One Semester (1 credit)
Prerequisite: “C” or better in Screenprinting 1.
This course is a more in-depth study of the techniques of screenprinting. The skills of multi-color printing and computer graphics, Freehand and Photoshop, will be the primary concern of the course with greater emphasis on the money-making aspect of screenprinting. The student is expected to provide some materials.
810 COMMERCIAL DESIGN
Grade Level: 9-12 Term: One Semester (1 credit)
Commercial Design is a specialized course planned toward careers in the commercial field of art. Students in this class will work closely with Yearbook in the design of cover and page graphics using the computer. Emphasis is on design and production methods as they apply to various projects. Other 2D and 3D projects may include architectural design, packaging, book illustration, and etc. The student may be required to buy some materials.
811 YEARBOOK GRAPHICS
Grade Level: 10-12 Term: All year (2 credits)
Prerequisite: Written application and permission of instructor.
Create the BNL Yearbook!. The BNL Yearbook is created and produced by students in this class. It serves as a document that records the activities and interests of all students at BNL. This class teaches journalistic and graphic arts skills. Seeking advertising is a requirement of the class. Grades are based on participation, quality of work, and meeting deadlines.
812 PHOTOGRAPHY
Grade Level: 9-12 Term: One Semester (1 credit)
Students will create beautiful black and white photographs after learning how to use 35mm manual cameras and the old-fashioned darkroom. It is a very hands-on, creative class and each photograph takes time and effort to make. Students are required to provide a 35mm manual camera (available at many pawn shops, goodwill stores, on ebay and other online auction sites, new at some stores, and from older friends and relatives who took pictures pre-year 1995), film, and photographic darkroom paper.
814 ADVANCED PHOTOGRAPHY
Grade Level: 10-12 Term: One Semester (1 credit)
Prerequisite: Beginning Photography grade of "C" or higher.
Students will study techniques to improve their photography skills in the darkroom and with 35mm manual cameras. Digital photography may be explored, as well as more advanced darkroom techniques. Students are required to provide camera, film and photographic darkroom paper.
816 DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY
Grade Level: 10-12 Term: One Semester(1 credit)
Prerequisite: Beginning Photography grade of "C" or higher.
This class will focus on digital cameras and the use of Adobe Photoshop CS5 to work with and manipulate images. Emphasis will be on the enhancement and manipulation of photographs. Projects will include taking creative photographs, moving images from camera to computer, and working with Adobe Photoshop CS5. This is a computer-heavy class and each class period will require computer use. Photoshop projects will range from creating simple color or black and white photographs to creating obviously manipulated computer-based images. Students provide their own digital camera. Any camera will be fine: point and shoot or SLR (larger and fancier cameras.)
818 JEWELRY DESIGN AND METAL WORK
Grade Level: 9-12 Term: All Year (2 credits)
Students will explore the beginning process of jewelry design and creation. Strong design will be stressed, and drawing/sketching will be a necessary part of the class. A wide variety of materials and methods will be taught throughout the course. Projects will vary from learning how to create hemp and ceramic jewelry, to working with metals. Extra expenses will occur averaging $20 to cover the cost of the metals used.
820 SCULPTURE AND CLAY
Grade Level: 9-12 Term: One Semester (1credit)
Students will have the opportunity to design and create three dimensional works of art using a variety of materials such as plaster, clay, found materials, and metal. Emphasis will be placed upon the creative use of materials, proper use of tools and various techniques in the designing of their projects.
822 SCULPTURE AND STONE
Grade Level: 9-12 Term: One Semester (1 credit)
Students will have the opportunity to design and create three-dimensional works of art using a variety of materials such as limestone, plaster, clay, or found objects. Emphasis will be placed upon using proper tools and techniques in the designing and making of projects.
823 ADVANCED SCULPTURE
Grade Level: 10-12 Term: One Semester (1 credit)
Perquisite: Sculpture 1 must be taken in sequence. Students must have the teacher's permission or must have a “C” or better in Stone Sculpture 1.
This course is for students with a serious interest in stone sculpture. The student must demonstrate a high degree of skill level in designing, carving and finishing of projects.
824 CERAMICS AND POTTERY
Grade Level: 9-12 Term: All Year (2 credits)
The student will explore the basic processes of creating a finished product with ceramic clay. Hand building clay processes including pinching, coil building, slab construction, sculpting, and using press molds and drape molds will be taught. A variety of surface decorating techniques as well as how to decorate ceramic pieces using slips, under glazes, oxides and glazes will be explored. Throwing on the potters wheel will be introduced.
826 DRAWING
Grade Level: 9-12 Term: All Year (2 credits)
The purpose of this course is to introduce students to the fundamentals of pencil drawing. Basic elements and techniques will be covered. Drawing is for the students that can’t draw but wish they could. Working primarily in pencil, the student will learn how to develop the skills necessary to draw anything and everything. Talent is not necessary, just a willingness to try.
828 ADVANCED DRAWING
Grade Level: 10-12 Term: One Semester (1 credit)
Prerequisite: Drawing Level 1: The student should have a “C” or better in drawing.
At this level, students will be drawing more from their own ideas. This class is for students with serious interest in drawing. Projects may take several weeks to complete and students will be using pencil as well as other media.
830 AIRBRUSH AND MURAL PAINTING
Grade Level: 9-12 Term: 1 Semester (1 credit)
Students will be exposed to the technique of airbrush in the design of t-shirts, painting of murals, and general illustration. The student should be self-motivated because of the amount of independent work. The student will be expected to provide additional materials and tools. (Usually less than $5.00)
832 ADVANCED AIRBRUSH AND MURAL PAINTING
Grade Level: 9-12 Term: One Semester (1 credit)
Prerequisite: Airbrush grade must be a “C” or higher.
Students in this course will advance to the use of double-action airbrush to develop skills that could be used in a career in airbrush or related fields. Emphasis will be on freehand work and skills. Projects include portraits, automotive illustration, license plates, and shop skills of the professional artist. The student will be expected to provide some materials and tools.
838 ADVANCED CERAMICS AND POTTERY
Grade Level: 10-12 Term: All Year (2 credits)
Prerequisite: Must have completed Ceramics and Pottery with a "C" or better.
The student will refine their basic hand building and/or wheel throwing skills. Focus at this level is on the "idea" and designing of a piece and choosing the best methods to achieve a successful result. Glaze testing, how to correctly load and fire kilns will be explored in more detail.
839 ADVANCED JEWELRY DESIGN AND METALWORK
Grade Level: 10-12 Term: All Year (2 credits)
Prerequisite: Must have completed Jewelery Design and Metal Work with a "C" or better.
Students will continue to improve their jewelry and metal working techniques as they create their own unique pieces of jewelry. New techniques and materials will be added as the student is ready to explore them. The number of metal working projects will increase at this level. Projects are very individualized and encouraged at this level. Extra expenses will occur averaging $20 to cover the cost of the metals used.
842 STAINED GLASS
Grade Level: 9-12 Term: All Year (2 credits)
The students will explore the beginning process of stained glass. Glass cutting, grinding, soldering, and the copper foil technique will be taught. Students must pay for expenses beyond the class fee. This will be necessary in order to compensate for the high cost of the glass. Average cost each semester is usually $25 but may be more depending on glass used in class.
843 ADVANCED STAINED GLASS
Grade Level: 10-12 Term: All Year (2 credits)
Prerequisite: Must have successfully completed Stained Glass with a “C” or better.
The student will work on improving their technique as well as other options in glass design. Students will have the opportunity to design original works. Students must pay for any extra expenses beyond the course fee because of the cost of glass. Average cost each semester is usually $25 but may be more depending on glass used in class.
846 COMPUTER GRAPHICS
Grade Level: 10-12 Term: One Semester (1 credit)
This class is designed for the student that is interested in the graphics of printing, illustration, video, or web design using the computer. The student will learn graphic skills in both raster and vector based programs and methods of combining these in a final product. Working with Adobe Photoshop and Macromedia Freehand, the student will be involved in the design and production of projects in the school as well as their own work. Areas covered in this class will be photo manipulation, vector graphics, optimizing for the web, and capturing digital images. Students may be responsible for purchasing additional materials.
847 ADVANCED COMPUTER GRAPHICS
Grade Level: 10-12 Term: One Semester (1 credit)
Prerequisite: Must have a “C” or better in Computer Graphics 846.
This course is designed for the student interested in developing stronger computer graphic skills in Photoshop. Skills in other graphic programs such as Freehand will also be explored in more depth. Greater emphasis will be placed on design skills and creative thought at this level. Efforts will also be made to involve the student in real life graphic projects in the school and community when possible.
